At Borders School of Dance, we talk a lot about what we teach, but today we want to share something just as important…
What we love to see from our dancers.
Because while technique matters, and progress matters, it’s the attitude and energy in the room that truly shape a dancer’s journey.
Here’s what makes our teacher hearts happy every single week.
⸻
Insightful Questions
We absolutely love when students ask questions.
Not just “what comes next?” but thoughtful questions that show they are thinking, processing, and trying to understand.
Every child learns differently. Some are visual learners, some need to feel it in their body, some need things broken down step by step, and some need to understand the why behind it. When a student asks a question, it gives us the opportunity to explain something in a new way that might unlock it for them.
Questions are always welcome in our studio. Curiosity is a strength.
⸻
Practice Beyond the Studio
We can always tell when a dancer has practised at home.
That extra practice builds muscle memory, but it also builds something deeper, self discipline.
Of course, in the lead up to exams, extra practice sessions with teachers will always be part of the journey. That is true in every dance school. We rehearse together, refine together, and prepare properly. But independent practice is just as important.
When a dancer chooses to go over a step at home, even for ten minutes, they are developing ownership of their learning. Independent practice is key to a dancer’s confidence and long term progress.
This habit reaches far beyond dance. It supports academic study, exam preparation, time management, personal goal setting, and long term resilience.
⸻
Energy, Effort and Good Vibes
We love high energy. We love dancers who throw themselves into a warm up, who smile through a tricky sequence, and who bring positive vibes into the room.
Learning happens best in an environment that feels safe, fun and encouraging. Technique thrives when joy is present.
When students bring effort and enthusiasm into class, it lifts the whole room. Dance is a shared experience, and the energy is contagious.
⸻
The Bigger Picture
At Borders School of Dance, we are not just developing dancers. We are helping young people grow into confident, curious, hardworking individuals.
We love thoughtful questions, independent practice, effort over ego, energy over hesitation, and progress over perfection.
Because those qualities will carry our dancers far beyond the studio walls.
And if you ever wonder whether we notice the extra effort, the practice in the kitchen, or the questions after class… we do. Every time.
